Americans last in line

This Speakout has not been edited

By John DiNardo, Aurora

This is an experience that happened to my wife in Denver County Traffic Court, Denver, Colorado. She had to appear in traffic court as a result of a speeding ticket. She was speeding and knew she would have a fine to pay. We have no problem with that.

The rest of the court experience, however, is something we should all stand up and take exception to and ask what is happening to the United States?

She was asked to be in court by 4:30PM, with which she complied. However, when she got there, it was announced that all non-English speaking persons with traffic violations would be taken care of first. The reasoning being that the interpreter leaves every day at the same time and does not stay late. So a reward for not speaking English is one gets to go the front of the line.

Next, the non-English speaking individuals do not have driver’s licenses or insurance. Never was it asked why they did not have licenses, what they were doing to get licenses or insurance. What they were given for driving without a license was a $35 fine. Since many of them did not have $35 they were also given payment terms. So, they are granted another reward for not having the money to pay the fines.

My wife, who was born in Denver, Colorado, raised here, and lived here all her life, was given a $249 fine for her speeding ticket, was not given payment terms, and had to wait until all the non-speaking, aliens were treated first .

If I understand this correctly:

* Let’s never require the non -English speaking individuals who live in this country to learn English.

* Let’s never require they become citizens of this United States of America.

* Let’s never require them to ever get driver’s licenses and pray they never kill someone on the road with their driving.

* Let’s never require they get automobile insurance, so that all of us who do will pay higher and higher premiums.

* Let’s make sure that those of us who do get injured by these individuals pay higher and higher health insurance premiums

* Let’s make sure those who can pay their fines, pay big ones to subsidize all those $35 fines on payment plans.

* Let’s make sure we never inconvenience them and let’s never inconvenience the interpreters in this country who may have to work late.

Our Country is eroding every day right before our eyes.

No country in the world has ever survived having 2 major languages.

We are heading down that path. (I highlighted this because I believe i t needs to be acknowledged. Does it matter to you?)

READER COMMENTS

I think if you speed you shoud be offered a Safety class or a fine. I also think Courts should have a system where everybody is helped in a timely matter. The problem with ilegal aliens is they really dont care if they have a license since they are not on a point system.....They are here illegally and they dont have any reverance for the law. I received a speeding ticket and my son who is a toddler got of of his car seat and I did not realize it....I was mortified when I stopped since I was scared for his safety....there is NO excuse for me going so fast either....how stupid of me al the way around.....the Cop did not ask for my insurance or give me a ticket for my son being out of the seat....he just told me I would have to go to court and pay a fine. Is there really a concern about safety or is all about money!

jgd777, what is with you people and your fences? It's always about fences. Just kidding.

You don't have to be an illegal immigrant to get ticketed and pay a fine for driving without a license...then walk out into the parking lot and drive off. Just ask Paris Hilton.

Let's solve the problem. How about earmarking one sheriff's deputy and one federal marshall to wait in the parking lot outside of county court and round 'em up when they turn the key in the ignition? With one of those giant paddywagons waiting. Seriously, I'm for that.

The Sheriff,

The odds of her running over a child are far greater than the odds of someone who forgot to carry their license running over a child

Forgot to carry their licenses??

What they forgot was to go to the Motor Vehicle Department and pass a few test, like the written and driving, they also forgot to bring along some legal ID. And of course they just forgot to stop by the auto insurance office to buy a policy. They also forgot to register with the Immigration department, guess there wasn't any of those offices in the middle of the desert.

Guess we all know which side of the illegal immigration fence you stand on.

Since when does court meet on a Sunday? His wife went to court on April Fool's Day? Who's fooling who here, eh?

Welcome to living in " Sanctuary City of Denver". Where the law only applies to law biding citizens and not illegal aliens.

Nuff said.....

What makes you assume that the people who were driving without a license were not speeding? Why were they stopped?

I have been to traffic court a couple of times (In my case, it was because the state kept not changing my address and they didn't send me renewals for my plates.) People without licenses or insurance are not punished according to the letter of the law. In many cases they are not punished even for a second, third or fourth offense.

John,

I understand your point..It's about preferential
treatment ..to non english..people. Whether it be your situation or ..like the guy from Mexico ..that dragged his girlfriend tied to a rope..and drug her for a mile or two..he had had speeding tickets..and his drivers licence was not his he had his picture cut out and glued on it. He didn't get a ticket for speeding.
Had he been deported the lady would be alive now. It's about fairness to Americans..
Not be treated like stepchildren.
Let everyone without sin cast the first stone.
Getting a speeding ticket dosn't make a person an outcast of society!

Channel 4 news did an investigative story on how illegals with no licenses and no insurance where coming out of traffic court and just driving away. The courts obviously do not enforce the laws. They don't care if the people in court drive away after suspending their licenses or not. It just seems they care whether the fine is paid.
This story was the norm not a once in a while thing that happens.

Mr. Forward, your personal attack is diminished by the facts of: truthy calling me anti-american, the Speaker's turning his wife's violation of law into a chance to rail against the Courts, and the Speaker's third-from-last line....

"Our Country is eroding every day right before our eyes."

No it isn't and it's sad that he believes that. And no, he doesn't "understand this correctly" because it's not an appropriate opportunity to complain of perceived citizenship slights. Traffic Court sucks for everyone. Don't like it? Stay out of it.

Posted by TheSheriff on July 6, 2007 05:13 PM

Boy, Sheriff, your wisdom is just overwhelming in laying the blame for any opinion others than your as being due to fears of the downfall of America (whatever that means!) .

I have to bow out and let you have the final words. You have demonstrated that the old adage, "Never argue with a fool, they will lower you to their level and then beat you with experience" is alive and well in Denver.

Posted by David R. Forward on July 6, 2007 04:56 PM

Sorry Mr. Forward, but I didn't see any reference to preferential treatment of one defendant over others. The violation of different laws have different penalties.

If you've ever been to traffic court, you know that ALL defendants are required to be there at 4:30. Then the cases for that time are administered in the most cost effective way, for the COURTS. The fact that there aren't enough tax dollars to pay interpreters overtime, the cost efficient way is to use them first. First whine.

Then DiNardo states that "the non-english speaking individuals do not have driver's licenses or insurance." I doubt that ALL of the non-english speakers had those violations, and that ALL of the english speaking ones didn't. Second whine.

And I doubt that all license and insurance failures were fined $35. This is a gross overstatement. Finally, did DiNardo's wife ASK for payment terms and show that she needed them? If she did, she'll get them. Third whine.

And your statement "Your ranting about just the speeding, regardless of how serious that may be in relation to other violations 'in your opinion'"....WHAT? We can't agree that not only my "opinion", but common sense dictates that a 2 ton object hurtling down the road 20 mph over the limit is vastly more dangerous than forgetting your license? Oh brother.

Maybe the extra hour spent in Traffic Court will teach a lesson that paying fines cannot. You simply don't want to be there and you'll slow down. Quit making it a "downfall of America" issue.

You and truthy live in a fantasy world, where everyone is out to get you. Perhaps a unicorn will take you away from traffic court to the pot-o-gold at the end of the rainbow....or your enforcement fairies will force all of those non-english speakers to goose-step in line and say "heil".

Posted by TheSheriff on July 6, 2007 04:43 PM

Nice try "Sheriff", but you are obfuscating the underlying theme of the letter -- preferential treatment for some defendants over others. Your high fa luting stance about the speeding is beating a dead horse. Mrs. DiNardo admitted her quilt and paid her fine. One would hope that she has learned her lesson and lightened the pressure on her accelerator.

Did the non-English speaking defendants, from where ever --or why ever they don't speak English (doesn't matter ) learn anything by receiving a slap on the wrist for not having proof of insurance nor a valid driving license? Based on statistical probability one could reasonably assume that some of the non-English speaking defendants were illegal immigrants from one country or another. Some may have been long time residents who for one reason or another haven't learned English. That's not the point either.

Your ranting about just the speeding, regardless of how serious that may be in relation to other violations in your opinion; and, implying that the DiNardo's are also tax cheats and racist overshadows any logic you may be attempting to display in either of your postings.

I truly hope that you are not in law enforcement in this country -- I think it would be unsavory to be forced to say "heil" every time you were involved in a situation. And your picking and choosing which laws are important as compared to others is a free society's nightmare come true.

Posted by David R. Forward on July 6, 2007 03:46 PM

truthy believes that it is anti-american to obey the law and pay your taxes. He probably lives on Ruby Ridge. And although DiNardo played the race card, truthy can't handle the obvious response. I wonder if DiNardo was referring to our "non-english speaking" eastern european immigrants? What, the Russian interpreter went home early? the French interpreter? No, he reveals himself with the "2 major languages" reference.

David R. Forward almost sounds reasonable, but falls apart in the second sentence. Where does DiNardo, anywhere, mention "illegal immigrants." Of course, if English is their second language, they must be illegal, right? No, interpreters are offered in Court because important rights are implicated and there are technical terms to be dealt with. And of course, it's important to be sympathetic to anyone fined $249 for speeding, unless of course, you're in the cross-walk, right Mr. Forward?

Do the crime? Do the time. Quit whining and blaming it on your perceived downfall of America.

Posted by TheSheriff on July 6, 2007 03:27 PM

Hey Sheriff,

Nice try but only the stupidest people would buy your smart ass comments as anything other than anti-American bullshit. You look in the mirror, you race baiting moron.

Posted by truthy on July 6, 2007 01:38 PM

With all of his law and order posturing "The Sheriff" overlooks the main points in your letter; Denver is a sanctuary city that will bend over backwards to assist illegal immigrants without regard to the law. The experience Mrs. DiNardo had with the judicial branch of Denver's government is, unfortunately, typical of favoritism shown towards, and the coddling of illegal immigrants who work for slave wages. The questions as to whether or not they are breaking laws that Mrs. DiNardo also broke is not an issue with Denver -- only whether or not the pro-illegal immigrant lobby is appeased.

"The Sheriff" shows his disregard for law as he never acknowledges the violations of the illegals in court. Rather, he prefers to attack the legal resident and even play the race card to diminish the valid points in the letter.

Viewing the perspective of "The Sheriff", an obvious apologist for enslavement of (dirt cheap labor), and favoritism towards, illegal immigrants, Mrs. DiNardo should be ashamed to have been on the same roads as the non-english speaking defendants. Once he played the race card it was obvious that his quiver of rational arguments in defense of coddling illegal immigrants was empty and that he can't handle truth or reality.

I extend my sympathies to the DiNardos for having to first be subjected to the biased judicial system of Denver;, and secondly, to the irrational, self aggrandizing rant of our local sheriff.

Mrs. DiNardo did wrong and admitted it, facing the consequences of her actions. That is to be respected. The fact that others were allowed to slide due to their ethnicity, cultural background or immigration status is wrong. If they are allowed a free pass and/or preferential treatment for some violations, what's to encourage them to not expand the bounds of future violations?

Posted by David R. Forward on July 6, 2007 01:36 PM

We have a problem with your wife breaking the law. Maybe next time, your wife will think twice about endangering all other drivers on the road. A $249 fine? She must have been going at least 20 mph over the limit. The odds of her running over a child are far greater than the odds of someone who forgot to carry their license running over a child. Oh, and nice assumption that someone who doesn't speak English is not an American. Pay all of your taxes and maybe the Court can afford to pay overtime.

Our country is eroding because of tax cheats, reckless drivers, and racism. Look in the mirror.
