Open letter to Sen. Ken Salazar on immigration
Tuesday, July 3 at 11:37 AM

This Speakout has not been edited

By Sen. Dave Schultheis, Colorado Springs

Recently, Sen. Salazar challenged citizens to come up with a better plan to handle the immkigration issues if they didn’t like the one he is proposing.

Judging from the large volume of e-mails I received last week, citizens in Colorado and across the nation are becoming incensed with the continued push for amnesty by President Bush and certain select senators in Washington. They refuse to listen to the citizens of this country, who oppose amnesty no matter what pretty label is put on the package.

In Colorado, our own Senator Ken Salazar has angered voters by becoming a “point man” for Ted Kennedy’s amnesty package. Salazar has the gall to tell citizens that if we don’t’ like it we should “come up with a better one”! Citizens have been suggesting a sensible alternative for years: secure the border and enforce the law!

When Sen. Salazar says that “our nation badly needs the reform,” what he is really saying is that we need an amnesty program that virtually decimates our borders. In Senator Salazar, we have an elected official who places the wishes of illegal aliens and their “immigrant rights” advocates above those of American citizens. Coloradoans will not forget this rejection of the rule of law.

Representative Tom Tancredo got it right in his recent comments on the failed Senate amnesty bill: “It’s a shame that Senator Salazar, President Bush and others seem to be so tone-deaf on this.” Tancredo is derided by the mainstream media for his fierce opposition to amnesty, but he alone had the courage to fight this battle while most politicians were asleep. Salazar refused to debate Tancredo on CBS’s Face the Nation, which shows he is afraid to come out from behind his curtain of misleading rhetoric and debate the real issues.

President Bush is equally to blame for this embarrassing circus. He is attempting to strong-arm (or should I say bribe) reluctant Republican Senators to vote for this travesty. Seven Republican Senators voted last week to continue pandering to big business and their agriculture buddies, while Democrats openly salivate at the prospect of ten to fifteen million new Democrat voters.

The best test of who actually best represents the views of the American people is to separate the Senate bill into five individual bills and vote on each proposal separately and in sequence —- first, genuine border security; second, stronger workplace enforcement; third, new rules for future green cards by phasing out “family reunification” visas in favor of merit-based visas based on education and job skills; fourth, the guest worker proposal; and finally, the “Z visa amnesty.” The “probationary benefits” instant amnesty section of the bill should be dropped forever. I challenge Sen. Salazar to support all five of these separate bills and to persuade Majority Leader Reid to force cloture votes on all of them! Then let’s see which Senators have the courage to vote for amnesty. Why are Kennedy and Reid and Salazar afraid to do that? Sen. Salazar denigrates opposition and refers the millions of Americans who want Congress to enforce our current immigration laws as “bomb-throwers.” He ought to consider several ideas that are very popular with the voters of Colorado. He should begin with the enforcement of our existing laws, including:

Secure the border: appropriate the funds to build the fence already authorized by Congress NOW!

Hold employers accountable through stiff fines and/or jail time for knowingly hiring illegal workers.

Enforce the existing time limits on legal H2A and H2B migrant workers to require them to go home after their seasonal employment.

Locate, apprehend and deport all 656,000 illegal alien absconders—individuals who have already had their “day in court” but refuse to accept their deportation orders.

There are many additional immigration laws needed to strengthen our immigration system:

Withhold all federal highway funds from states that do not implement requirements for secure driver’s license documents as mandated by the Real ID Act as adopted by Congress in 2005.

Revise the IRS code to penalize non-profits for aiding and abetting illegal aliens.

Enact federal legislation challenging court misinterpretations of the 14th Amendment allowing children born of illegal aliens to obtain citizenship.

Ensure jail time and then deportation of all illegal aliens convicted of any DUI or felony.

Change banking laws to prohibit those in the U.S. illegally from access to services including wire transfers.

End chain migration in the award of green cards based on familial relationships, promoted by Sen. Kennedy in the 1965 Immigration “Reform” bill.

It’s time that Sen. Salazar came “out from the shadows” of Sen. Kennedy. Instead of private, close-door meetings with Kennedy and amnesty coconspirators, he should meet openly with the citizens of Colorado to explain and defend his actions. It is time that Sen. Salazar took notice of the burden on taxpayers to pay for upwards of $1 billion annually in costs to support illegal aliens in Colorado’s schools, hospitals and prisons. It is time that Sen. Salazar took notice of those Colorado families who have suffered deaths by drunken illegal alien drivers, execution-style killings of police officers and rapes. My answer to your challenge, Sen. Salazar, is to ask you to show some leadership to see that federal funding is sufficient to enforce our current laws. I suggest that you propose a bill that puts in place the suggested legislation set forth above. The citizens of Colorado are screaming to get your attention. If you listen, you can’t help but hear them.

Secure the border and enforce existing law. Then we can talk about a real amnesty. One backed by law and decisive action. Also "anchor baby" legislation needs to be repealed.

Bob O,

Whats despicable is the shamnesty..bill
the Flake/Gutirrez bill thats totally outragous. Visas A -thru- Z. Look at it sometime.

Posted by on July 7, 2007 06:11 PM

Your position on illegal immigration is despecable! And furthermore, your position on the energy bill, promoting more ethanol required, not convential alternatives, and no incentives from the public sector, is also awful. You are a bad legislator, and you will be defeated in the next Senatorial election!!!

Posted by Bob Osmundson on July 6, 2007 11:37 PM

Can I get an AMEN!, yes, I understand that you're not too bright.

I'm a citizen of the United States of America. The fact that you've adopted "American" to refer solely to that, tells us something.

Now, how about answering the questions? We'll start with....what is that country we had that we "want back"? The depression 30's? The world-war 40's? The population explosion and Korean War 50's? The free love/drug, vietnam & race-war 60's? The price freeze, watergate, oil shortage 70's? The me first, AIDS, and Falwell 80's? The Gulf War, race-riot and scandal in government 90's? or the 9/11, scandal in government, Iraq war, celebrity obsessed 2000's?

Hold on a minute, and let me get a drink....or a prescription...if we're going backward in time.

Posted by tax&spend on July 6, 2007 05:49 PM

I think tax and spend is anderson,or at least a clone of him.

Tax and spend,I;ll go really slow this time so you understand.

I was wishing a Happy

Independence Day to my
fellow AMERICAN CITIZENS!!!!!!

The ones that are legal

American citizens. You know

the ones that live in The United States of America ????

Do you understand now??

Posted by Can I get an AMEN! on July 6, 2007 03:43 PM

What part of ENFORCE THE LAW are you having trouble with Mr. Salazar?

Posted by truthy on July 6, 2007 01:42 PM

Can I get an AMEN....you can get a map instead. Look at the part that says "North America" and count the countries. Your hatred of anything foreign to you makes you usurp the entire America to apply only to citizens of the United States.

Now you've adopted your own Germany/Europe analogy....its more like you saying that everyone in America, north or south, is from the United States.

Now, let's get back to the point. Would you advocate NO immigration at all; some immigration under certain guidelines (that you will describe); or open immigration? And according to your first post....what is the country that we had that we "want back?" And what is the pressure that we need to keep putting on congress? The pressure to do what? Stay in gridlock over this issue?

Posted by tax&spend on July 6, 2007 09:34 AM

Tax and spend, What the hell are you talking about? Canadians aren't Americans and people in Mexico are not Americans.

That's like saying everyone in Europe is German.

Posted by Can I get an AMEN! on July 6, 2007 06:35 AM

Many people have offered the senator better plans, he just chooses to ignore them. My suggestion is enforce the current laws first. Then allow permanent legal status, not citizenship.

Posted by cHRIS on July 5, 2007 03:09 PM

jgd777,

I'm waiting to read an alternative proposal. What?!?! Nothing close to acceptable by even a close minority of congress has been offered?!? I can't believe it! What happened to all of the creative minds in congress?

It's real easy to sit on your hands and shout at the top of your lungs, "no amnesty" while the problem grows bigger, and bigger, and bigger.

And you don't think there are Chinese immigrants sneaking across the border? With airport security on international flights, ALL of the illegals come across the borders. Funny think is, they're doing it at Niagra Falls, not Texas, and they're from a multitude of countries. Hell, we can't even keep out a TB patient on a watch list.

And by the way, you just lost your ranch. I don't give a nickel about Swift or its employees, legal or illegal. Of course, you probably do because your 4th of July burger cost 25 cents more a pound because Swift has to pay higher wages and can't get away with paying substandard to illegals.

Of course I would support increased border patrols, and their attendant costs of hiring. But also, any mistake, like the TB patient, should result in immediate firing with loss of any pension rights. Vigilance is the key, and if someone isn't vigilant in that position, regardless of the mistake...no pension, and no credit for the 20+ years of good service prior to that mistake, because as I've heard time and again: "we have to be right 100% of the time, and a terrorist only has to be right once."

Posted by tax&spend on July 5, 2007 10:13 AM

We love you Can I get an AMEN!, you terrified xenophobe.

I'm sure the native americans want their country back too, so you and your ancestors can leave now.

And the last time I looked, Mexico and Canada are your fellow Americans, so they are a bit confused by your independence day wishes.

Some day you'll wake up in the real world. We just hope it's soon, and that until then, you're paying your taxes in full.

Posted by tax&spend on July 5, 2007 09:13 AM

Mr. Salazar thinks any plan that doesn't have amnesty in it is wrong.
The American people have screamed loud , "NO AMNESTY! "
There have been many great proposals to stop this madness. If it doesn't have amnesty built into it Salazar and his cronies don't want to hear it.

Sen. Shultheis has an excellent plan and many others have come up with the same plan. The amnesty crowd keeps sticking their fingers in their ears and don't want to hear it.

As Americans we need to keep the pressure on. Just because they are on vacation doesn't mean we stop e-mailing and calling their offices.Keep the pressure on!

As we celebrate Independence Day,everyone should send an e-mail or call their Senators and congressmans office and Salazar's to demand our Independence back from illegal aliens.

WE want our country back!

Happy Independence Day my fellow AMERICANS!!!!!!

Mr. Salazar is a traitor in my book. He has proven that he will ignore our wishes over and over.

On this July fourth he would do well to remember what flag flies over the state capitol.

I am anxiously waiting to hear Salazar's reelections speeches. Do you think I will have to press "1" to hear them in English? However I know what "button" to push when I am in the voting booth. "ABS" (anyone but Salazar)

"No one is "jumping ahead" of others, unless you consider paying to jump in line, "jumping ahead." Get your facts straight and maybe READ the proposed bill instead of listening to someone's opinion of the bill".

A Chinese person living in China has applied for a Visa and is waiting patiently. They are looking forward to attending school in the US and starting a new life. They have been waiting 2 years for the processing to be completed. On the other hand a person sneaked across the border last month. Which one will be able to obtain all of the benefits of being a citizen except of course voting. Wink Wink

And the winner is : The person who entered illegally, because they get to have the Super Visa. As for the Chinese person, well they are still waiting. Would you call that jumping in front of the line, sure sounds like it to me.

Maybe you should reread the proposal

You make the statement "No one, left or right, objects to a secure border" but you object to every security measure. No wall, that is just a waste of money, don't increase the border patrol that cost to much and heaven forbid we can't deport anyone who entered illegally, that would break up a family.

So let me get this straight, you don't want to stop the illegals at the border, high tech cameras will just give us a good picture of the illegal. Had the amnesty bill passed any illegal picked up at the border couldn't be deported until they had the opportunity to apply for the Z Visa. And I would be willing to bet the ranch that when ICE raided the Swift plant you were one of the first to voice your objections.

So my question is: What border security measures would you endorse?

Removal can and has been done
Search Google for the rest of this story
”How Eisenhower solved illegal border crossings from Mexico”
President Eisenhower cut off this illegal traffic. He did it quickly and decisively with only 1,075 United States Border Patrol agents-less than one-tenth of today's force. The operation is still highly praised among veterans of the Border Patrol. “3 million here at that time” General Swing's fast-moving campaign soon secured America's borders - an accomplishment no other president has since equaled. Illegal migration had dropped 95 percent by the late 1950s

to all the bleeding hearts out there, what kind of country do you want to leave your children and grand children? There is a legal immigration presentation on google called “IMMIGRATION GUMBALLS”, watch the 17 minute one, it will scare the cr_p out of the biggest bleeding heart because of the massive increase in population. Unless you want to destroy this country? Reduce all immigration NOW!!!!!!

jgd777, your question has an inane and self-serving premise, that's why no one will answer it.

No one, left or right, objects to a secure border. What is objectionable is the statement, "we need a secure border" without a logical and reasoned plan. A fence will be as effective as sharks with laser beams. I object to you spending my hard-earned money on sharks with laser beams.

And Steve-o, I check those record deficits, every time I pay my taxes. And the premise of your question is inane and self-serving as well. No one is "jumping ahead" of others, unless you consider paying to jump in line, "jumping ahead." Get your facts straight and maybe READ the proposed bill instead of listening to someone's opinion of the bill.

And guess what everyone?, how about showing a little respect for those who have come here and worked their asses off to stay. That's good-old American initiative. At least they have more initiative than the fat-assed lazy couch potatoes that take life in the USA for granted. Yes, I'm talkin' to you bubba.

Will they have to stand on the south side of the fence at all times?
Is there a plan to build a fence against Canada too?

tax and spend,

You better check those "record deficits," they have been cut in half and are still decreasing.

THE QUESTION YOU WON'T ANSWER IS THIS ONE:

Why should people who came here illegally get to jump ahead of others from all over the world attempting to come here legally?

tax and spent,

So you are saying it make more sense to legalize and allow the 20 million illegals to stay, bring in another 20 or 30 million (family members) and still leave the border open to another 30 million or more illegals. You think we shouldn't be spending money on border security so we can throw it away on social programs, schooling, health care and all of the "nanny state" benefits for the illegals

And you are calling other people Idiots?

RU Serious reveals that he is also a tax and spend Republican.

How about a little honesty? Record deficits, and its not due to failing earmarks. It is due to record spending...by Republicans...on "pork" no-bid contracts and cash for Iraqi "informants" while our servicemen go without body armor.

Tax & spend, tax & spend, tax & spend...the middle class gets hosed.

Where in the heck is our other Senator? Do we even have one? Oh yeah, he's labeled the most ineffective member of Congress. Thanks for weighing in on the issue, Wayne. What a joke, and now Colorado becomes even more of a joke with bonehead Tancredo. Nice press op. Maybe we should elect the Shagman from the Rocky's ads. A loveable dope.

Will one of you tax & spend Republicans DO SOMETHING OTHER THAN EMBARRASS THE STATE?

Posted by tax&spend on July 3, 2007 02:38 PM

Senator Salazar has proven where his loyalties lie, and that is with his own ethnic group, but mostly the ILLEGAL ones! He doesn't seem to care at all about poor American blacks, browns, or whites who suffer depressed wages and inferior schools because of the invasion of illegal aliens eager to work under-the-table or for ridiculously low pay, whose children can't even speak English and hold back native American children by lowering school standards. And Salazar did not bother counting what the amnesty would have cost America in benefits to instantly legalized aliens. We struggle to lift up our own poor and educate them, and their assistance could only be vastly diluted by the hordes being legalized. But Salazar must feel we can just pile huge taxes on the American middle and upper classes (of all colors). No doubt with tens of millions of formerly illegal Hispanics in residence, all Hispanics in leadership positions such as Senator Salazar would enjoy vastly greater prestige and power.

Posted by Denise on July 3, 2007 02:23 PM

Well done, Senator. It's about time a public figure stood up and said what many of us have been saying for a long time. Salazar and his buddies won't allow this approach because they would have to either vote against the amnesty they want or expose their actual agenda.

For Salazar - we won't forget this when your re-election comes up. Payback will be sweet. You will be one and done.

Tax and Spend:

It could be done if the earmarks and pork were eliminated from the federal budget. You just don't want it. How about being honest?

Schultheis is another one of those many tax & spend Republicans. Just throw money at it, it will go away! Build a fence that will take years, millions of $$ and be ineffective. Hire thousands of immigration officers with millions of $$ in new salaries, to "enforce the law" by arresting, requiring millions of $$ in new jails, and deporting, requiring millions of $$ in transportation costs.

This open letter is the prime example of "bomb-throwing." Lacking in realism, loaded with rhetoric, with no practical solution.

Welcome to the new Republican...tax & spend, tax & spend, tax & spend, no real change. What an idiot. Your constituency should be SO proud!

Posted by Tax&Spend on July 3, 2007 01:10 PM

Say goodbye to re-election Mr. Salazar. Your political pandering for "immigrant rights" over American security and rule of law has been revealed for the shallow political stunt it was. You should be ashamed of yourself for placing your race ahead of the cumulative rights of your constituents ( and that does not include those here illegally, but you already know that).

Posted by A former supporter on July 3, 2007 12:41 PM

I would have supported the immigration bill except for one thing. I want those who skirted our laws and entered into this country illlegally to gain citizenship only one way - the same as any other foreigner. This requires them to go home and apply LEGALLY.

I do support giving those who qualify green cards now, but by doing so, they give up their right to ever become a United States citizen.

Once all these lawbreakers are registered, impose SEVERE penalties for being in the United States illegally. Give even more severe penalties to those who employ any illegal worker.

If the illegal workers deception (ie. stolen SS card, forged paperwork) results in an employer hiring an illegal alien, the worker is guilty of forgery and fraud, and should be punished accordingly.

There is NO REASON for illegal residents to dictate how we handle this.
