He began as an overlooked longshot. Now he's the man to watch.

A whole lot of stars had to align before former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee reached the top tier in the Republican presidential contest.

Now, with just a week until the much-hyped Iowa precinct caucuses, the question is whether he can cling to the lead he built seemingly overnight. Will he score? Will he flop? Will it matter in the long run?

Today, the Rocky Mountain News begins a three-day series on the evolution of the 2008 presidential campaign, including lessons learned from Decorah to Red Oak, Muscatine to Rock Rapids, and every place in between.

PART ONE: Republicans
"Slugfest to the caucuses: GOP hopefuls in Iowa in bruising battle" (CLICK HERE)

PART TWO: Democrats
Join us Friday for a look at how a leaked memorandum and a long-forgotten decision raised the stakes for the first contest on the long, long road to the Democratic National Convention in Denver.

PART THREE: Why Iowa?
On Saturday, we tackle the question folks are asking in 49 other states: Why Iowa? What did these folks do to get all this power? And what is the power? As we've learned in about 17,000 miles of driving down the back roads to the White House, it's the power to make future presidents beg.

CHECK BACK each day -- and let us know what you think.

Fred is one of the most straightforward politicians I’ve seen. To quote an old saying, “he says what he means, and means what he says”. He understands the world we live in, the gravity of our war on terrorism and the geopolitics involved, our national security requirements, as well as the necessity of a strong economy, and proficient health and educational systems. And he understands what role the federal government should take in these matters and what roles it should not, states rights. You see, Fred is a firm believer in our constitution. He’s quite outspoken for our 2nd ammendment rights because of that belief. Go to Fred08.com to see for yourself his stances on the issues and his plans for improvement
