Bring back the draft, you'll bring back the protests. But you'd have to couple it with the kind of day-to-day repression that included Jim Crow laws down south and lack of free speech on campus -- the little nit-picky intrusions that your generation (and mine) got rid of. Oh, and we were being drafted two years before we were old enough to vote.

Face it, when college kids have most of their rights, and when they're only watching other kids, mostly from neighborhoods they didn't grow up in, go off to war, their outrage remains pretty theoretical.

Whoops -- didn't mean to put the Jim Crow laws in with small annoyances. Day to day, yes. But of much greater import than not being able to pass out political pamphlets on campus.

    Ted in Vegas writes:

Why are things the same? Because human nature doesn't change. We could have hippie generation after hippie generation after hippie generation, and the only thing that would change is that things would get even worse.

The BIG, dividing line between American liberals and American conservatives is that conservatives understand that human nature doesn't change, no matter how you structure your society. There is nothing you or I can do to eliminate hatred, envy, strife or murder from the hearts of mankind.

All WE can do is ameliorate the problems. We can have laws protecting people from hatred. We can open up opportunity through free markets, easing the envy. We can have police and viable self-defense to keep strife from breaking into actual violence. We can imprison criminals and execute the worst of them. BUT WE CANNOT CHANGE THE HEARTS OF MEN.

The hearts of men are evil and desparately wicked; all of us, myself included, have a measure of wickedness. A conservative accepts that reality and looks to ameliorate the effects; on the other hand, a liberal tries to change hearts. Might as well be working to change the laws of gravity; both have the same likelihood of success.

Only Jesus Christ can change the hearts of A man or woman, but that person has to seek Him first. Most won't.

Since I lived and protested in the 60's, I have a different point of view...

Americans are in love with the concept of heroes, military heroes, veterans of each and every frequent unending undeclared war, and enjoy the imperial military might we so heavily finance to the exclusion of the best interests of our own people...and have twisted war into "freeing people for democracy"..altho I notice we only free CERTAIN people..Haiti, Sudan, Burma, Tibet, etc etc don't deserve freeing I guess..oh stupid me, there's no OIL there to pillage!!

People of peace are considered weak la las, unable to understand the heavy reality of the wicked world.

As I've always said, follow the money. What we really value is what we pay for. We pay for war and oil, and killing innocents...and call veterans heroes.
Makes me despise so-called Christians and war-mongers, usually the same ilk.

And Americans are different from anyone else how? PEOPLE are in love with heroes; it part of being human.

If you can't see that or feel that, I wonder if you have any humanity left in you.

You may think you live in a perfectable world; but the truth is, you're deceiving yourself.
