More Drilling

Stei080821B.gif

I don't usually like cartoons that simply illustrate the news, but in this case the news is its own satire. A poll of Coloradans indicates a widespread dislike for energy companies, along with a desire for the very companies we so deeply distrust to drill for more oil and gas. It's like saying that Bush has bungled Iraq, so let's let him invade Iran. Without going into the patent absurdity of thinking that opening up more lands to drilling will bring the price of gas at the pump down in any foreseeable future, let's just say that we're a might confused on the issue. Economic panic will do that. The problem is, the solutions that our pandering politicos (read McCain here) come up with will only enrich the very oil companies we so dislike, and won't put a penny in our pockets. But the Republicans have been quite adept at persuading Americans to vote against their own economic self-interest, and they're doing a great job of it again.

Record Sales (worldwide) = Record Profits.

You get more profits by selling more product. Profit margins amongst oil companies are still modest, its just 9-11% of a humungous pie as opposed to Starbucks' 27% of a small pie.

BTW - Opening up California off-shore oil will hit the markets in 2-3 years. Further opening up the Gulf of Mexico will hit the market faster than that. Opening up the Atlantic will hit the market in 6-7 years. Opening up ANWR will hit the markets in 8-9 years.

Opening up Wind and Solar will hit the market in appreciable amount in 30-40 years!

Therefore we should put of expansion of Wind and Solar indefinitately!

Opening up Pacific drilling will hit the market in 3-4 years. Further opening up the Gulf of Mexico will hit the market faster than that. Opening up the Atlantic coast will hit the market in 6-8 years and opening up ANWR will hit the market in 8-9 years.

On the other hand, pouring billions of dollars into Wind and Solar will give us appreciable amounts of energy in 30-40 years.

Which makes more sense? Letting private business bear the costs of providing us more energy from multiple sources in the next 10 years or pouring BILLIONS of tax dollars into alternative energy that won't pay off for decades?

No matter how much you hate productive capitalism, your liberal mind can't get around reality.

Now, back to work! Somebody has to pay for liberal redistribution of wealth!

I would like to know, Ed, how you figure the energy companies are to blame for keeping us "addicted to gas and oil." I think the "widespread dislike for oil companies" you refer to are a result of the anti-oil propaganda that is so prevelant from people such as you.

I dont actually know what youre talking about here. This cant be the only approach to think about this can it? It seems like you know a lot about the subject, so why not explore it more? Make it a lot more accessible to everyone else who may not agree with you? Youd get a good deal a lot more folks behind this should you just stopped generating general statements.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like 'Mixview' that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you're listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of "neighbors" will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune "Social" is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
