My own political memory goes back only to the 90s--I vaguely remember the '92 and the '96 conventions. Come to think about it, though, I also only vaguely remember the '00 and '04 conventions. Were they more than just week-long political adverts, I'd imagine they'd have been more memorable. I'm not at all surprised that this convention is more of the same. I expect as much from this year's Republican convention as well. And even more of the same from the debates.
