Approval

Stei080917B.gif

John McCain's reversal yesterday should alarm anyone who intends to vote for him. in the wake of the devastating losses on Wall Street, he insisted, as he has for months, that the fundamentals of the economy are sound. Within hours (after his panicked handlers got to him, one assumes) he was saying something entirely different. By the afternoon, he was gloomily stating that the fundamentals were at risk, and calling for, you guess it, reforms! The same reforms, I'm guessing, that he has steadfastly voted against during his entire senate career.

    Its Justme writes:

It would be nice if editorialists were required to document their "facts." For instance, where did you get the fact that giant wall street investment firms were the largest contributors to John McCain's campaign. You make it sound like they're donating above and beyond what's legal. It's my understanding that individuals and corporations are prohibited from exceeding a set limit in donating to campaigns. That limit is relatively low compared to gross income. We're talking thousands of dollars, not millions. Do you honestly think that McCain feels he has to do their bidding. If so, what sector do the largest contributors to Obama's campaign come from? Do you think he feels he has to do their bidding too? Isn't that relevant also?

I love your cartoons, but this is over the top. I am not a McCain supporter, but I certainly think that you have overstated his ties to the Wall Street debacle. This is not responsible journalism, when you can launch personal attacks without quoting any real facts. I think they call it yellow journalism or some other term that uses the printed media as an attack dog. Yes, attack dog.

  • September 17, 2008

    11:08 AM

    Ed Stein writes:

According to a number of sources, Merrill Lynch and other investment firms have given more than $300,000 to the McCain campaign, making them the largest single contributor. There are a number of ways that companies and individuals can bundle contributions without exceeding legal limits. (For the record, Obama has received far more from Wall Street, which doesn't change the facts presented in the cartoon.) Phil Gramm, who has vigorously fought any attempts to regulate Investment Banks, and who has championed the very kinds of shaky investment devices that have helped lead to this collapse, is McCain's chief economic adviser. McCain, who has positioned himself as a deregulator his entire career, now is calling for the very kinds of regulations he has voted against regularly. The cartoon is accurate and fair.

I have seen nothing but pro liberal cartoons from Mr Stein so I assume he is a liberal as well. That is fine if the Rocky would balance it out with pro conservative cartoons as well. I just haven't seen that and I am close to cancelling my subscription because of it.

    Ted in Vegas writes:

So, Ed, D'OHbama takes more from Wall Street than McCain but it is McCain that has the closest ties to Wall Street? Typical liberal double-talk.

Besides, wasn't ACORN - D'OHbama's employer when he was a Community Organizer - that argued for the changes to the financial market that opened up home ownership to low-wage, high-risk borrowers? YEP!!! D'OHbama's work as a Community Organizer is at the root of the cause of the instability of our current mortgage markets.

And you still back him? What else is he going to destroy?

  • September 17, 2008

    Its Justme writes:

It's nice to see you respond directly, Mr. Stein. However, your response was pretty humorous. The main point of your cartoon was not the regulatory vs. non-regulatory stance of McCain, but his receiving vast amounts of contributions. Then you admit Obama received even more. Also pertinent in my mind is that Obama has close personal ties to the former CEO of Fannie Mae in Jim Johnson, the leader of his VP selection team until forced to step down. But again, thank you for your honesty in admitting that McCain is no more in the pocket of giant financial concerns than Obama is.

  • September 17, 2008

    1:19 PM

    Its Justme writes:

Ok, I'm wrong when I said "The main point of your cartoon was not the regulatory vs. non-regulatory stance of McCain, but his receiving vast amounts of contributions." So the contributions panel is just to paint him as being in a quid pro quo situation with the financial industry. Also in my first post, I said their donations were in the thousands not millions and it's nice to see that you verify that statement was correct.

    Old Timer writes:

Poor Ed. He must have taken this from the likes of media matters or the moveon.org types. Because the facts are just the opposite. Obama and his democratic cronies are the ones that this cartoon applies to. Oh well, Liberals have never been known for publishing truth. I guess it hurts too much.

  • September 17, 2008

    4:32 PM

    Ed Stein writes:

To Let's Be Fair: If you haven't seen cartoons by conservatives balancing my woirk in the Rocky, it's because you haven't been looking. We regularly run the work of Henry Payne, Scott Stantis, Robert Arial and others, all of them fine cartoonists quite capable of neutralizing my comments. In fact, the total number of their cartoons each week usually outnumbers mine. You must also have noticed that our editorials generally hew to a much more conservative line than my cartoons; in fact, I'm the token liberal on the page. One of the goals of the Commentary section is to present a wide variety of political views, which I believe we consistently accomplish. If you aren't seeing this, I think you need to take another look.

    Jan Timmons writes:

So, to recap what I've just read, Ed's editorial cartoon illustrated McCain's consistent voting record against regulating the finance industry. Now McCain and Palin are calling for more regulation in a circular self-contradictory way.

Meanwhile, the focus is on whether Ed is a liberal? Or was that with a capital L. And whether Ed quoted the correct amount of contributions?

Why do McCain and Palin's sudden switches and attempts to obfuscate, okay, lie about their previous positions seem tough for this group of readers to grasp?

Excellent editorial, Ed. I would have grinned if the entire mess weren't so sad. Engendered such intelligent comments. I really worry about the future of this country, and of our small planet.

OH, and by the way, the top five money getters from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac? ALL DEMONRATS!!!

We need reformers in Washington! If D'OHbama is now the second-best donation getter from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac - IN JUST TWO YEARS!!!! - how willing will he be to reform?????????? Or bring "CHANGE"?

MCCAIN still ran a bill that most DEMONRATS, including Clinton, Dodd, Kennedy, etal., voted against!

Bush vetoed it? OK, thank you for proving that McCain and Bush are NOT birds of the same feather.

  • September 19, 2008

    4:59 PM

    Ted in Vegas writes:

OH, I found out something. McCain's bill was not vetoed, it never got out of the Senate due to Chris Dodd, Hillary Clinton and other Demonrats who were/are getting BIGTIME $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac lobbyists.

D'OHbama's now the second-biggest recipient of lobbyist $$$$$$$$$$$$$$, and he's going to change the system? He's more in the tank to them than anyone else not named Chris Dodd.

At least McCain, and Bush - in 2003, tried to put a stop to this foolishness before tragedy struck.

I know that in your twisted mind, Jay, you'll somehow still come away thinking that those who caused this problem (DEMONRATS) will somehow save us despite the evidence that Republicans have been trying to fix the problem. It was the DEMONRATS AND RINOs (Republicans In Name Only)s that stopped us from fixing our mortgage markets before the collapse.

GET EDUCATED!!! Some RINOs have helped the Demonrats keep this money wheel rolling, but when McCain tried to stop it - you can't really blame him. Can you? (I guess it all depends on whether or not you're able to suspend your intelligence.)

The way I see it is that all the things that they are saying nay, preaching can be rolled up into one thing and that is having the self-discipline to follow-through with whatever it is that you are doing. Personally, I strongly believe that following through is the singular most important ingredient in attaining success, not only in bodybuilding/building muscles but in life in general. This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like 'Mixview' that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you're listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of "neighbors" will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune "Social" is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

It's very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

If you're still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you'll know which is right for you.

I'll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

Sorry for the huge review, but I'm really loving the new Zune, and hope this, as well as the excellent reviews some other people have written, will help you decide if it's the right choice for you.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It's very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

Thanks for the wise critique. Me & my neighbour have been making ready to do a little analysis concerning that. We obtained a good quality ebook on that matter from our local library as well as most books where not as influensive as your information. I'm exceptionally glad to see such data which I was searching for a protracted time. This made exceptionally glad! Anyhow, in my language, there aren't a lot superior source comparable this.

Hands down, Apple's app store wins by a mile. It's a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I'm not sure I'd want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
