Worth reading about the difficulty of reporting from Iraq

The Wall Street Journal published a first-person article by one of its reporters who had been stationed in Baghdad for three years. It should be required reading for anybody who wonders why the Western media has so much trouble giving an accurate picture of what's going on in that country.

I came away from Farnaz Fassihi's article moved by her courage and commitment. This is one of the best pieces I've seen about what it's like to be a reporter in Iraq.

Yea, this was a darn good read - ran front page in the print edition. Nice that the WSJ did not put it behind the online wall. I really respect journalists like this (and your Rocky guys John) who take huge personal risks while I just read about it in suburban non-war zone home ... my hats off to all of you.

Noteworthy also is that the WSJ's mantra is "free market, free people" ... and their editorials support our involvement in Iraq. This *news* piece paints a rather bleak picture, yet they ran it front page.

I mention that not to spark the obligatory "should we be there, should we not" discussion, but that while people are quick to point out liberal (or conversative) bias in the media, there is also a lot of just plain old good first person news reporting as was done here.
